The Internet as a Garden, not a Cage
Cultivating a Rich Life in a Digital World
Hi everyone,
I don’t watch tv. But I’m on the internet a lot. I find it super interesting and, in many ways, I love it.
I see a vast landscape, brimming with possibility. It’s a place to learn, work, and build relationships. I feel constantly inspired, educating myself and discovering new possibilities in art, health, communication, business, tech, and more. For those of us living deeply in this "world," the stakes are profoundly high, actually. We spend a lot of time here! The online world is a big part of our reality.
Internet immersion also has a dark side. Beware the endless scroll, the addicting dopamine rush, cheap entertainment, reduced attention spans, rage bait, drama, anger, and polarization. Lots of bad stuff! If we are not mindful, this digital landscape can lure us into addictive loops that waste our time and drain our energy.
I look around and I see people grappling with their “online life” which is a life I consider completely real and important. I see people angry or hurt via online drama. Others go hard on social media until they simply disappear. I am left wondering what happened.
More subtly, we can find ourselves in echo chambers, convinced we're making progress when we're really cycling through familiar patterns. When we do the same thing every day (online or offline), we get stuck in loops. Go to the same place every day. Hear the same messages. Feel the same feelings. The pattern becomes very limiting. There is great value in stepping back for a new vantage point.
Good news: we don’t have to be passive recipients. We have the opportunity to build on the internet, to influence how it forms, and to consciously shape our experience. We can choose to examine the loops we’ve fallen into and actively redesign them.
For people who love to learn, who are artistically inspired, who crave meaningful friendships and creative expression, the internet should magnify our lives. I believe we can go deep and get really good at using the internet and tech for good. It’s about making the online landscape complement a full, vibrant existence.
Go outside. Play. Talk to friends and family. Make art. Have fun. Complementing other parts of life, the online world is a new part of reality… another landscape to explore and influence.
Imagine your online presence as a deliberate ecosystem, structured for well-being and contribution. I am imagining the same for myself!
Your Home Garden (Website): Your permanent ground. Plant your deepest ideas here, cultivate your work, and invite people in. You control its beauty and organization.
The Path to Your Garden (Newsletter): Your direct invitation, a consistent connection that cuts through the noise and brings people back to your world.
The Wild Meadows (Social Media): Explore here for new ideas and serendipitous connections. Visit and share but be careful. Do you want to build your entire life in these transient and vulnerable spaces?
The internet can be a waste of time or a source of profound enrichment. We have a choice in how we cultivate our gardens, design our loops, and build places in the digital world. A life enhanced by technology, not reduced by it.
Warmly,
Dan Ryan
