The Hard Work of Simplicity

A lesson I'm learning about building things.

Hi everyone,

A lesson I'm slowly internalizing is the power of keeping things simple and direct.

It’s a realization I've been coming to over time as I watch people interact with the content and websites I've created. I carefully think out all the steps for creating a system or putting a design on a product, but I'm seeing that even people who are most engaged are looking for concise directions.

This is the tricky part. The thinking behind the scenes isn't simple at all. It’s a complex process of mapping out a user journey, anticipating where someone might get stuck, designing a whole system, and wrestling with code. It’s a lot of work. But then, my job is to take that complexity and hide it.

The goal is to translate it all into a clean, straightforward path. For me, this is a conscious shift toward focusing on clear, simple experiences. It isn't always my first instinct, but I'm learning it's real work.

Does this resonate with you, either as a creator or as someone using products/services? I'm curious to know.

More on this as I go.

Until next time,

Dan Ryan
