Partnering with Your Potential

AI for ambitious ideas, not shortcuts

Hi everyone,

Have you ever had a big idea - a project you wanted to start, a skill you wanted to learn - but felt like you were missing a key piece of the puzzle? That feeling of a gap between our vision and our capacity is one we all know well.

But we have a new resource.

I've been taking advantage of a powerful way to bridge that gap: partnering with Artificial Intelligence.

The conversation around AI can feel intimidating and sometimes there's controversy around this technology. But what do I think? I'm very enthusiastic about what we can accomplish with AI. And I think mindset is very important here.

Yes, on a societal level, there are unanswered questions about what the future will look like. But on an individual level, we are empowered to do more than ever before.

The barrier to entry isn't expertise; it's curiosity. Plus, it helps to have a general understanding of what AI does. The hallmarks of its abilities are simple:

  • data analysis

  • pattern recognition

  • generation

That’s it. It’s not magic; it’s a set of powerful skills. The magic is what you put into it. AI is a partner that can analyze vast information, see connections we might miss, and generate new content based on what it knows. It’s a tool that teaches you how to use it, but you have to be willing to experiment.

A successful partnership requires human wisdom. I experienced this while trying to fix a coding issue on my website. The AI, relentlessly optimistic, kept generating solutions. I followed its lead for hours until my website was completely broken. (Thankfully, I had a backup.)

The lesson was clear. AI is adept at analysis and seeks to solve problems, but it needs a human strategist. We need to think critically about the ideal course of action. Our role is to provide the direction, the gut feeling, and sometimes, the wisdom to say, "Stop!” Then, we direct a new path.

On this day, I lost hours learning a lesson. Yet, what’s the bigger picture? I’ve used AI to create websites I never would have been able to make otherwise.

I’m happy to deal with the flaws so I can discover what becomes possible. Like any skill, you have to practice to really understand.

But it's important to be intentional with this new skill. Of course, there are downsides to AI. It can be used as a shortcut to decrease human effort and thought. But that’s the opposite of what I’m recommending. You have the tools to envision and achieve ambitious work. You can use AI to expand your capacity, not to outsource it.

Back to that gap between our vision and our capacity... What if it’s smaller than we think?

What's an ambitious idea that you've put on the shelf?

Until next time,

Dan Ryan
