Finding My Path: Honesty, Practical Examples, and Building in Public

Responding to feedback and sharing the real journey

The Value of Direct Feedback

Last week, after writing a newsletter about systems thinking, I received feedback from someone whose opinion I deeply respect. They pointed out something important: my newsletter was heavy on theory but light on specific examples. They suggested that concrete applications would help maintain reader interest.

This is the kind of honest perspective I value hearing. It also highlighted something I wrestle with in my content creation journey: the balance between concepts and personal examples.

The Courage to Be a Work-in-Progress

A common strategy online is to position ourselves as authorities. You've seen it right? Thread after thread of "10 secrets to success" or "How I built a 7-figure business" content. People writing from a position of accomplishment, bestowing wisdom upon followers.

Now, wisdom is not bad. And there are some true authorities teaching all of us. But when I see this template too much, I feel fatigued. I want to offer something different.

The truth is, some of my ideas are theory, or early works-in-progress. But they stand on a strong foundation. Professionally, I have worked in operations management and team development for many years. As an new entrepreneur, I'm a few years into my journey, building, learning, and translating existing skills in a new environment.

By chance, are you navigating a similar transition with your own skills?

My Current Projects: What I'm Actually Building

Most immediately, I am co-hosting a workshop with Christel Guillen on June 17:

"Beyond the Algorithm: Build a Thriving Community Off Platform," a one-hour deep dive into why and how you should expand your community off platform to reclaim ownership and create real value.

Other projects:

TeamworkState: A community platform designed to bring together people interested in meaningful collaboration. Also, a website that will grow richer with tools and resources.

  • Currently, I’m learning to articulate the unique value the community can provide and inspire independent participation and peer-to-peer connections.

ArtfulNotebook: My artistic expression finds form here and extends into the print-on-demand/merch business model.

  • When I started, I followed guru advice too closely, but I have learned a lot about balancing artistic integrity with commercial appeal.

ArtfulNetworks: This project (just beginning now) will connect to and expand from both platforms above, creating digital spaces for myself and others.

  • What kind of digital spaces do you feel are missing or needed for creators and their communities?

Back to Systems Thinking (Briefly)

Returning to last week’s topic, I am certain that the ability to think in systems will benefit us all. In an entrepreneurial and content creation environment, this includes:

  • Understanding the unique dynamics of each platform we participate in

  • Building our own communities and platforms (Let’s do it!)

  • Thoughtfully repurposing content

  • Listening closely to feedback from followers, friends, and subscribers

  • Recognizing where our professional skills can translate in a new environment

  • Understanding that our personal lifestyle habits (diet, exercise, relationships, sleep) impact our overall energy, focus, and creative capacity.

Teamwork and Feedback

Across environments, I have seen over and over that people who are open to constructive feedback and invested in their relationships excel. I’m here for it. Here to teach what I know and always learn from the people around me.
