A Different Kind of Update

My main focus lately has been deep in the build phase of Mandalafy.com (more on that soon). But for today's newsletter, I want to explore a different pattern I've observed. It’s one that operates quietly in the background of our creative and professional efforts.

It’s the concept of the virtuous cycle. This is the idea that small, intentional habits, when practiced consistently, don’t just add up. They compound, creating an upward spiral where one good thing fuels the next. This concept has been more central to my life in recent years, and I’m glad for it.

Learning with Intent

We all face a choice in how we use the vast information streams of YouTube and social media. Instead of passive scrolling, we can approach them as a massive library for self-improvement.

By being intentional through actions like following experts, listening to interviews, and seeking knowledge, we transform a potential distraction into a powerful learning habit.

Personally, I gravitate towards auditory learning, absorbing extended interviews on YouTube and participating in knowledge-sharing social audio spaces. This habit has helped me learn everything from health routines to business strategies.

The Foundational Cycles: Health and Relationships

The most powerful virtuous cycles often begin with the foundations of our lives.

Our health

The principle is simple: good habits feed each other. Better sleep provides more energy, which motivates exercise. Good nutrition and movement lead to sharper focus and creativity. It’s not just about feeling good; it’s about building the fundamental capacity to do great work. In my own life, this means:

  • Waking up around the same time daily and walking outside as soon as I can.

  • Consistent exercise, including waking, bicycling, rowing machine, and weight training.

  • Mindfulness around what and when I eat (really understanding what is in food and what it does to us)

Our relationships

Small acts of kindness, checking in with a friend, or offering support are investments that build a network of trust. When you need help or a fresh perspective, that foundation is there for you just as you are there for others.

The Reality of Prioritization

Of course, the list of "good habits" is endless. I wish I could spend more time in nature, for example. But like many of you, my days are filled with a day job and focused computer work on my projects.

This forces a crucial question: Which habits provide the highest return for the time invested?

We can't do everything. We have to choose. Recognizing that my energy and focus are the bedrock of my creativity has made these health-related habits the highest-leverage activities I can do. They are not a distraction from my work. They are the foundation for it.

Leverage, Not Shortcuts

This same mindset around intentional habits extends to technology and AI. It’s easy to view these tools as shortcuts, but their power lies in leverage, specifically the ability to take on more ambitious projects than we could alone.

By partnering with AI to build websites or design complex tools, we aren't avoiding the work. We are expanding the scope of what's possible. Seeking leverage rather than just efficiency allows us to build more interesting things. This in turn fuels our creative energy and skill development.

The Interconnected System

These aren't separate efforts. They form an interconnected system. The clarity you get from a healthy lifestyle directly impacts the quality of your work. The support from your relationships gives you the resilience to tackle ambitious projects. The knowledge you gain from intentional learning sharpens how you use powerful tools.

Each small, intentional habit creates a positive ripple effect. Together they form a personal system that supports growth and achievement.
